Is a lab-grown diamond a real diamond?

Yes. It isn't cubic zirconia, isn't moissanite, isn't a diamond look-alike. It's diamond - full stop.

Both can be cut, polished, set, and worn every day. A lab can tell you which is which using specialized screening - nothing about how the stone performs on your hand changes based on the answer.

How is a lab-grown diamond made?

It grows atom by atom, under conditions engineered to reproduce the heat and pressure that build a diamond crystal underground - geological time compressed into a lab timeline. Once grown, it's cut and polished exactly the way a mined stone would be.

What actually determines how a diamond looks on you is the 4Cs - the same scale used for mined stones:

• Cut - how well it returns light, which is what reads as "sparkle"
• Color - how colorless a white diamond is
• Clarity - internal and surface characteristics
• Carat weight - the stone's physical weight

The 4Cs give you a common language for comparing stones. They're not the whole story, though - design and origin matter just as much for a piece meant to live with you for years.

Is a lab-grown diamond as hard as a mined one?

Yes - both score a 10 on the Mohs scale, the ceiling of that scale. Nothing scratches a diamond in ordinary wear.

"Hard" isn't "indestructible," though. A sharp direct hit - especially at a pointed corner on a pear, marquise, or emerald cut - can still chip a stone. A few habits keep fine jewelry looking right for decades:

• Take it off before heavy manual work, sport, or gardening

How do you know a lab-grown diamond is genuine?

Two things do the actual work: laser inscription, and an independent grading report.

Laser inscription is a microscopic marking on the stone, usually near the girdle, invisible to the naked eye, read under magnification - it can carry a report number or another traceability reference. Every diamond used in Diamonds.Ro jewelry is laser-inscribed as part of that chain.

Independent grading matters most on larger stones. A report from the International Gemological Institute (IGI) documents shape, measurements, carat weight, color, clarity, and confirms lab-grown origin. It's not a certificate of value - it's a description of the specific stone you're holding. Worth checking that the report number and inscription match what arrives in the box.

Our diamonds carry grading standards affiliated with GIA, and our production partner is a member of the Responsible Jewellery Council - the industry body auditing ethical practice from sourcing through manufacturing.

What does "responsible sourcing" mean at Diamonds.Ro?

We'd rather it mean something specific than sound nice: identifiable supply pathways, clear disclosure of lab-grown origin, and a production partner whose practices can be checked by someone other than us.

That partner holds the Butterfly Mark - an ESG+ certification from Positive Luxury, scored independently across environmental, social, governance, and innovation criteria, with a minimum 50% required in each.

One honest caveat: that certification doesn't make any single piece "impact-free." No fine jewelry earns that label truthfully. What it gives you is one independently verified signal inside a larger commitment to transparency.

Are lab-grown diamonds cheaper than mined ones?

Generally yes, for comparable size and quality - you're not paying for extraction. But carat, cut, color, clarity, shape, metal, and design all move the number too.

The more useful question usually isn't "which is cheaper." It's what you actually want more of: a bigger center stone for the budget, a design nobody else is wearing, or a piece built to reconfigure into three different looks instead of sitting in a box between wears.
